Why does a golf club have grooves?

The grooves on a club stop the ball from sliding up on the clubface at impact.

As a ball is struck, it will ride up the clubface until the grooves and dimples of

the ball interact to trap the ball and help propel it forward. The grooves also

create backspin which allows the ball to take flight.
